Biogas for Rural Households – Nigeria

Project Overview
The Biogas for Rural Households – Nigeria project promotes clean cooking solutions by replacing traditional biomass fuels with household-scale biogas systems. Prior to the project, many households relied on firewood and charcoal, contributing to deforestation, methane emissions, and indoor air pollution.
The project installs biogas digesters that convert organic waste into clean, renewable cooking fuel.
Technology & Methodology
Implemented under Gold Standard AMS-I.C, the project captures methane from organic waste and utilizes it for household energy. Emission reductions are calculated by comparing baseline fuel use with monitored biogas system performance.
Emission Reductions
- Avoided CO₂ and methane emissions
- Reduced pressure on forest resources
- Improved household energy efficiency
Social & Health Benefits
Households benefit from cleaner cooking, improved indoor air quality, and reduced fuel costs. The project also creates local employment in system installation and maintenance.
SDGs Alignment
The project supports SDGs 7, 8, 9, and 13, promoting clean energy access, economic opportunity, and climate mitigation.
Renewable Energy
This project follows the Renewable Energy methodology under the Gold Standard standard, focusing on renewable energy to deliver verified carbon credits.
Each credit represents one tonne of CO₂ emissions reduced, removed, or avoided, as verified by registry-approved third-party auditors.
